Acclaimed flutist Allison Hughes enjoys a diverse and exciting career of solo, chamber, and orchestral performances. She gave her Carnegie Hall debut in January 2016 as a founding member of Duo Alterity, which has garnered first prizes in the 2016 Vivo International Music Competition, 2016 Inaugural Hartt Chamber Music Competition, and 2017 Music of America’s Great Composers Competition.
Allison is currently Principal Flutist of the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra. Passionate about the flute as a solo instrument, Allison has performed the Liebermann Flute Concerto with the Hartt Orchestra. With Duo Alterity Allison was an Artist-in-Residence for the 2018 and 2019 seasons of Connecticut Summerfest Contemporary Music Festival, and has given performances at notable venues including The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, and the Governor’s Mansion in Hartford, Connecticut.
Allison has performed extensively in masterclasses for world renowned musicians including Emmanuel Pahud, the Imani Winds, the Lions Gate Trio, Amy Porter, Judith Mendenhall, Denis Azabagic, Andrew York, Oscar Ghiglia, and Antigoni Goni.
Allison is currently the flute instructor at Bay Path University and holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Flute Performance from The Hartt School, where she studied with internationally sought-after flutist Janet Arms. While at Hartt, Allison received a full scholarship as a member of the Performance 20/20 Honors Chamber Ensemble, and taught a technique class for flute performance majors. She loves sharing her passion for music and life with students, collaborators, and audiences alike.
Joseph Van Doran
Award winning classical guitarist Joseph Van Doran has performed throughout the United States as a soloist and chamber musician. Most recently he was an Artist-in-Residence with his flute and guitar duo, Duo Alterity, for the 2019 Connecticut Summerfest Contemporary Music Festival, as well as a finalist in the 2017 Classics Alive Young Artist Auditions.
A dedicated performer of new music, Joseph has premiered numerous new compositions. He gave the world premiere of “A Growing Absence,” a monumental guitar quartet by Lisa Coons, as a major part of the 2016 Women Composers Festival of Hartford, as well as the world premiere of “La Perla del Pico,” a quintet for flute and four guitars, by Frank Wallace in 2015. Through collaborations with the New England Guitar Ensembles Festival, Joseph has also presented the world premieres of “Never Forget Atahualpa,” by Carlo Domeniconi in 2015, “4 Moods and Coda” by Roland Dyens in 2014, and “Hemingway” by Andrew York in 2013.
As a founding member of Duo Alterity, with acclaimed flutist Allison Hughes, Joseph has won numerous awards, including first place in the 2017 Music of America’s Great Composers Competition, first place in the 2016 Vivo International Music Competition, and first place in the 2016 Inaugural Hartt Chamber Music Competition. Joseph received his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from The Hartt School as a student of internationally acclaimed guitarist Christopher Ladd, where he was invited to be a member of the prestigious Performance 20/20 Honors Chamber Music Program. He is also a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, where he studied under world-renowned guitarist Mark Delpriora.
